In recent years, China has asserted itself as a rising economic power, challenging the United States as the dominant world power. Considering this perceived threat, former president Donald Trump´s Administration imposed tariffs on imports from various trade partners. This reaction was particularly incisive against China, initiating an unprecedented trade war in modern times and represented a shift in attitude by the American government regarding trade policy. This project thus has two main objectives. On the one hand, we aim to show that the trade war launched by the American government against China can be analyzed within the theoretical dichotomy between the neorealist and liberal theories of International Relations. Secondly, we aim to evaluate the potential impacts of this conflict on other countries, through direct and indirect effects of international trade, having G20 as a focus.
